Get wrapped up with Shultz
Food Assistant Ms. Carmen Shultz has probably made more than 150,000 sandwiches in the nine years that she has worked in the high school deli line. (She makes an average of 100 sandwiches per day, according to Food Service Director Ms. Sharon Adami.)
Ms. Shultz said she grew up in New Columbia and attended Milton High School herself. After graduating in 1985, she said she did not continue on to college. She began working in Milton’s food service 16 years ago, she added, and shifted jobs from main entrée line to deli in 2010.
In her free time, Ms. Shultz said she likes to spend time with her grandchildren. She also enjoys baking apple pie, cooking and taking care of her 99-year-old grandmother, she added.
She said she becomes close to many students. “The students are generally polite, and I enjoy seeing them,” she said, and added that she loves making hoagies and wraps just the way the students like it.
She said she hates to see the seniors graduate because of how much she gets to know them during their high school career. “I love to see the kids every day. I like to joke around with them, and make everyone’s day a little brighter,” she added.
Senior Samantha Snyder said she has been going through the deli line since her freshman year. She added she always gets the same thing: a cheese wrap with ham and American cheese with lettuce and tomato.
“She starts making [my wrap] as soon as I walk up,” said Sam. She and fellow Senior Sage Starks both said they appreciate Ms. Shultz’s work.
Throughout the years she has worked at the school, Ms. Shultz said that she has also built close relationships with her co-workers. She said they joke around all day and have a good time, adding, “It’s just like spending the day with friends.”
Ms. Shultz said one of her best memories include seeing her children graduate from the school while she worked on the lunch staff.
The oddest sandwich request she recalls is from a student who asked her to make a turkey and tuna hoagie, she said. She added her personal favorite sandwich is a Reuben.
“She’s like a ray of sunshine,” said Ms. Adami. “She’s very dedicated, hardworking and willing to do what is required of her.”
“Ms. Shultz represents the school district, food service and she always puts the students first,” added Ms. Adami.
