Milton students get behind the wheel
A Driver Education course is currently available to Milton students, but it is not offered by the school district.
“It has not been offered at Milton Area High School for at least the last 20 years,” said High School Principal Mr. Andrew Rantz.
“The CSIU (Central Susquehanna Intermediate Unit) began offering Driver Education in the mid-nineties when school districts stopped offering Behind-the-Wheel as part of their regular curriculum,” said CARES (Curriculum, Assessment, Regional, Education, Service) Program Support Supervisor Ms. Leah Borow.
In the Driver Education course, students can enroll in the paper and pencil course or the online course at the CSIU’s website https://www.csiu.org/Page/1304, said Ms. Borow.
In order to enroll in the “Behind-the-Wheel” course, students must complete the application. They also need a valid Pennsylvania learner’s permit, proof of 30 hours of theory instruction, and have completed 65 hours of practice driving, she added.
Enrollment for the online course is $120 for a 30-hour course, said Mr. Rantz. He added that enrollment for the Behind-the-Wheel instruction costs $360.
Since July of 2019, 10 Milton students were enrolled in the Behind-the-Wheel program, and four Milton students were enrolled in the 30-hour online theory course, said Ms. Borow.
“They [CSIU instructors] actually use some of our grounds for training for three-point turns and parallel parking,” said Mr. Rantz. “It helps you get a break on your insurance, because insurance for a young driver is not cheap.”
The contact for the CSIU is Ms. Nancy Zaborowski, and students can reach her at [email protected].
