Aubrey entertains audiences
With The Addams Family quickly approaching as the spring musical, it is time to turn towards the actress behind a lead character, Morticia Addams– Senior Aubrey Chappell.
Aubrey said she began to sing as a 12-year-old, mainly singing at her church. When she reached high school, she began participating in the musicals but not chorus or choir.
She added that she has been involved with church musicals since she was a little girl with minor singing roles. She said her first and favorite performance with a major role was also her first high school performance: The Little Mermaid, where she played one of Ariel’s sisters.
Aubrey said she is happy with how much she has improved over the years, saying that through experience her voice has matured, and she is not as scared as she used to be.
Aubrey said her favorite co-star is Senior Rachel Kern because she is “silly and she is easy to work off of.” She added she has known Rachel since middle school, but they really became friends during their sophomore year during the play Once on This Island.
Rachel said her favorite moments with Aubrey are “anytime during rehearsal because her silliness really comes out.”
Aubrey added her work has not gone unrecognized because she won the Freshman Leadership Award which was chosen by her peers at Milton, and last year she was a Ray of Lights nominee for Best Performing Actress which was chosen by members of the Community Theater League that saw her perform.
When it comes to advice for new actors, Aubrey said that experience makes people improve, but there is still more to it. “I think the most important part is learning the part and becoming the character, and they need to break out of their comfort zone,” she added.
To make a character unique, Aubrey advises aspiring actors to “give them a touch of your personality.” She added she tends to give her characters more graceful movements and a smoother voice than most portrayals of the same character.
Aubrey said she is relieved that she is almost done performing, but it has been rewarding. She added she is also sad because she will miss it.
Aubrey said she wanted to thank her friends and family for getting her through all of her performances. “My parents really pushed me,” and “without them I would not be performing,” she added.
According to Aubrey, she has not decided on a college yet, but she plans to major in nursing. She added that she does not intend to continue her theater career. She said she is still thankful for the skills it has taught her, such as getting over nervousness.
