MHS Insta: Good fun or trouble

In late 2021, Instagram accounts that incorporate the daily life of students began to emerge in Milton High School and other schools.

Co-Principal Mr. Andrew Rantz said that he is aware of some of the accounts like the “MHS is pooping” account and “MHS is napping” but has yet to see the accounts since before winter break.

According to Mr. Rantz said the accounts are a “gray area” as far as enforcement is concerned.

“We are not the social media police… I can not control what students put on their own personal social media pages,” he added.

He believes the accounts were created out of pure humor with no ill-will, said Mr. Rantz. The school does not feel the need to bring themselves nor the police into the situation unless the accounts were to cause a disruption within the school or within the learning process, he added.

Mr. Rantz said he feels that social media is a part of modern-day society’s “good fun” and that if the accounts turned into more, then it would be an issue. No complaints regarding the Instagram accounts have been made as of now, but Mr. Rantz added that he wants students to come to him if they have any concerns.

Criminal Justice Teacher and Football Coach Mr. Philip Davis was posted on the “MHS lookalike” account. Mr. Davis said he is not on any social media sites nor does he plan to get involved. He added that he is fine with the accounts so long as it brings “laughter and humor” to others.

Even though the accounts are not considered a concern to most, some students around the school find them a bigger issue. According to Sophomore Jleea Linn, the accounts are an “invasion of people’s privacy” since permission is not typically asked.

Jleea said that she has bigger concerns than just permission issues. Issues considering students’ lives could be impacted due to the accounts, she added. Jleea explained that she has concerns toward the endangerment of children that get posted since the name of the high school is on the accounts.
