You’re off Monday, but stay tuned…

Milton Area High School had make-up days added to the calendar after the school year began and might have to use one to make-up the safety closure.

According to Co-Principal Mr. Andrew Rantz, whatever the decision is, the district will still have no school on Monday, Feb. 20.

He added that the 2022-23 school calendar was revised after the flexible instruction day (FID) application was not turned into the state.

“To no one’s fault, somewhere in the process of Dr. Keegan leaving as superintendent and Dr. Bickhart coming in as the new superintendent… Somewhere along the lines the ball got dropped and nobody submitted the application for us to have flexible instruction days this year,” said Mr. Rantz.

The 2022-23 calendar had to be revised since the original calendar was created under the assumption that “virtual days” would be an option.

“We have a student day that’s seven hours and five minutes long, and that is more than the minimum requirement of the school day,” said Mr. Rantz.

He added that the school has contacted the state, to find out if Milton will have to make-up the safety closure. “There is no timeline for this, I know that we are still investigating our options,” he said.

“We are required 990 instructional hours for the year, minimum. We have well over 1,000,” according to Mr. Rantz.

He said since the closure was not weather related, and was caused by one person, the school is in contact with the Department of Education to see if the extra instructional hours accumulated over the year can substitute a make-up day.
