Students count on Mr. Avery
Milton’s new Math Teacher Mr. Henry Avery teaches General Math, Consumer Math, Algebra 1 and Algebra 2.
Mr. Avery said his favorite classes to teach are Algebra, Trigonometry and Geometry.
He said that his job is teaching students to not be afraid of numbers and that math has practical applications for life.
Mr. Avery went to Danville High School, where his favorite subjects were math and music. Later, Mr. Avery attended Slippery Rock University for his undergrad degree in music. He attended Bloomsburg University for his masters in Curriculum and Instruction.
Mr. Avery said he played the trumpet for 18 years. He said he took a break to become a teacher and get the instrument professionally serviced.
Mr. Avery is a man of many hobbies, some of which he said include cooking, playing video games and board games and hanging out with his family.
Mr. Avery explained that music is one of the most overreaching subjects that a student could learn. “It has heavy connections within school subjects, specifically math, English, history and science,” he added.
He said he applied to Milton because he was a student teacher for Math Teacher Mr. Morris Davis for a semester and there was an open Math Teacher position.
“Genuine concern for academic improvement is a great strength of his,” Mr. Davis said of Mr. Avery.
As a student teacher, Mr. Avery taught Geometry, Academic Math, Honors Trigonometry and Trigonometry.
Mr. Avery’s previous teaching jobs have been as a substitute teacher at Danville for two years, at Berwick for three years and then at Milton for nine weeks prior to being hired.
“His personality is suited for teaching math,” according to Mr. Davis.
One of his funny teaching moments so far has been how often students are taken back by basic arithmetic facts.
“One of my personal teaching goals is to make sure that all students feel comfortable with school and understand the content,” he said.
Mr. Avery said that his experience at Milton so far has been positive with students and he has had an overall good impression.
