Sara sets athletic example
Senior Sara Dewyer started swimming in fifth grade, joined track and field her freshman year and began participating in field hockey her sophomore year.
Sara said she joined sports to push herself past her limits and to excel as both an individual and an athlete. She added that sports helped her create bonds with people and improved her time management skills.
“[Sports] helped me work on my time management skills because I had to balance school, practice and my social life,” said Sara.
Sara added that she competed in the long and triple jumps in track, and the 50 and 100 freestyles for swimming.
Her favorite thing about sports is growing and improving, said Sara. She added she enjoys building news skills to become a better person.
“I like seeing progress and positive change within myself,” said Sara.
According to Sara, her most memorable experience was last year when she medaled in long jump at Districts in Williamsport.
“I always enjoyed competing at that level,” said Sara. “I like seeing how far I can push myself.”
Her least favorite thing about sports is the strict time management, said Sara, adding that it requires a lot of commitment and adaptability.
“I feel like you have to change your schedule a lot, but the accommodations are worth it,” said Sara.
According to Sara, one of her biggest challenges has been self-doubt.
“In every sport, everyone kind of hits a wall, but that’s part of why you have to push yourself to get over it and endure,” said Sara.
Sara added all her coaches have been motivators for her, but the biggest was former Swim Coach Veronica Irvine, who retired at the end of this year’s swimming season.
“All across the board, they’ve all played big roles, and their words have really impacted my life,” said Sara.
According to Athletic Director and Girls Track Coach Mr. Rod Harris, Sara is a smart student who always participates, plays fair and is a fierce competitor. He added that she does a great job in the classroom.
“I think one of my favorite memories of her is at the District meet last year.” said Coach Harris. “She medaled at the championships.”
Coach Harris said that Sara is always happy to engage in exercises and is a fun person to be around. He added that she works extremely hard at running practice.
Sara said that outside of sports and school, she paints, draws, lifts weights and works at Weis Markets in Milton. She added that weightlifting helps her do better in sports.
According to Sara, she was accepted into Indiana University of Pennsylvania for art and education. She added she plans to join their track and field team.
