Social Studies Teacher Mr. Shawn Moore’s first year schedule at Milton includes American Government and Cultures, which is a middle school course.
According to Mr. Moore, he previously taught at Warrior Run High School as a long-term sub, Saint John Newman in Williamsport and most recently, at Mifflinburg High School.
Mr. Moore added he has taught Economics, AP American Government, AP European History, AP American History, Geography, Philosophy, Theology, a World War II elective and a film class.
He originally went to St. Charles Seminary in Philadelphia to be a Catholic priest, said Mr. Moore.
“I decided pretty early on in my freshman year while at St. Charles that I wasn’t being called to the priesthood,” he added. “Choosing seminary early on was a choice I made in haste. But after discerning my future, I knew that I just wasn’t cut out for the very challenging life of being a priest.”
According to Mr. Moore, he earned a bachelor’s degree in history at Bloomsburg University, where he continued as a graduate student, earning his master’s degree and teaching certificate.
“I look at my job as a vocation,” said Mr. Moore. Loving what he does and not taking anything personally helps him with the stress that comes with teaching, he explained.
“He’s a good guy. He loves history, and it is his genuine passion,” said English Teacher Mr. Wesley Cromley, who knew Mr. Moore before he was hired at Milton. He added that Mr. Moore loves local history and traveling.
Mr. Moore said he teaches using APL (Accreditation of Prior Learning), which he described as a strategy that allows teachers to engage students effectively throughout the class.
Mr. Moore added that he puts personality into his teaching, using stories and humor to keep the students engaged. He said that being kind to the kids in return gets good behavior.
After 14 years teaching, Mr. Moore said he is glad to work in his hometown. “I wanted to be in a job where I can help people, and teaching lets me help people,” he added. Being a Milton community member has helped him connect with and understand his students, he said.
“I’m really excited about getting the History Club back up and running next year,” added Mr. Moore. “Milton has had a Social Studies club in the past. I don’t know how many years it has been, but we have a club on the books that is school board approved.”
According to Mr. Moore, he is working on getting more club information out by spring, but the official kickoff for the History/Social Studies club will be next September.
“The club will allow students who have a love and appreciation for history to broaden their horizons and become more engaged citizens. I also hope to afford students the opportunity to travel beyond Milton,” said Mr. Moore.
