Math Teacher Mr. Jonathan Dick, along with his wife Dr. Lara Dick, led seven Milton High School students on a Travel Club trip to Toronto, Canada, from Feb. 16-18.
Mr. Dick said that the club toured and hiked Niagara Falls, passed border patrol, saw the CN tower, explored a few museums and toured a maple syrup farm to watch how maple syrup is produced. The Travel Club went to Canada for its first trip because it is the closest foreign country, he added.
Mr. Dick added that his favorite part of the trip was listening to how excited the students were to see new things– from the Niagara Falls and driving through the big city of Toronto to riding the metro for the first time.
According to Sophomore Camryn Hoover, a member of the Travel Club, her favorite part of the trip was visiting Niagara Falls. “My other favorite part was going inside Casa Loma, which is a castle,” she added.
She added that the trip was awesome, and she can’t think of anything she would change about it.
Mr. Dick said he got the idea to start the club from former Social Studies Teacher Mr. Michael Conn, who led groups of Milton students on trips all over the world.
“Mr. Conn believed very strongly in the idea that travel brightens peoples’ perspectives, and that that’s an important thing,” Mr. Dick added.
Mr. Dick said the trip’s $350 cost included hotel expenses, two meals a day and admission for the trip’s events. The Travel Club held a Krispy Kreme fundraiser and divided the earnings among participants to lower the expenses, he added.
Mr. Dick said he has already thought about ideas for the club’s next trip. He added his ideas include combination trips with the Outdoors Club to hike in Iceland, the French Club to Quebec, Canada, and to Mexico with the Spanish Honor Society.
Mr. Dick also added that he would like these trips to be student planned/led as much as possible. The next Travel Club meeting will be March 21, in Room 238 during Pride to discuss the next trip. Anyone can attend, he said.
