Technology Teacher Mr. Seth Reitz has been teaching at Milton since 1996. He teaches computer software classes in both the high school and middle school; however, he does so much more than just teach computer software.
Mr. Reitz’s current courses include Communications Media, Intro to Photoshop, Desktop Publishing, programming, School Publications, PCNow Programming in Python and PCNow Gaming.
Mr. Reitz said he first got interested in computer software back in elementary school when his family moved to Milton. “The biggest reason why is computers can spell and computers can write nicely, and those are two things I don’t do well at,” he added.
Mr. Reitz graduated from Milton. He later went to Lock Haven University for his undergraduate degree, and then earned his master’s degree from Bloomsburg University.
According to Mr. Reitz, he didn’t go to school to become a technology teacher. Instead, he went for social studies because he liked history and admired his past history teacher, he said.
Mr. Reitz added that he also became DCIT certified almost 10 years ago, which qualifies a person in troubleshooting a data center infrastructure.
Mr. Reitz said he would like to add a class that teaches what the IT people do into the curriculum. He added that he’d also like to add classes that collaborate with other teachers, like a photography/editing class with Art Teacher Ms. Lauren Richie or a class that works with journalism on digital projects with English Teacher Ms. Lauren Finnerty.
According to Mr. Reitz, he frequently collaborates with Business Teacher Ms. Jamie Emery-Seibert.
“Mr. Reitz’s reliability is a cornerstone of his character. When you need someone to count on, he is always there, ready to lend a helping hand,” said Ms. Emery-Seibert. “He consistently goes above and beyond what is expected, investing wholeheartedly in the success and best interest of our students.”
Mr. Reitz said he has also become very involved with Milton’s theatrical productions, adding that he helps Theater Director Mr. Stephen Aguirre, who teaches in Mifflinburg.
“Mr. Aguirre isn’t here, and there are some things that need to be done during the day. He lets me know, and I try to bridge the gap a little bit,” said Mr. Reitz.
According to Mr. Reitz, he does things like printing out scripts and posters, putting things on the announcements, and hanging up signs. “I like putting the play programs together. It’s some work, but it’s something I really like to do,” he added.
Mr. Reitz that there are more things that he would like to try out around the school, though he is not working on any projects right now. He added that he would also like to stream the stage on a screen backstage during productions to make it easier for the cast and crew to know their cues during shows. He said that he would also like to show events like sports games and theatrical productions on screens in the stadium and just outside of the auditorium.
According to Mr. Reitz, he has had many highs and lows in teaching at Milton. He said some of his high points include, but are not limited to, streaming the announcements, his video work in the Milton stadium, running a weekly newsletter for the school for five years and having the first Milton website created in his class. He also enjoyed creating the first school district TV ads that aired on CATV, which is a cable network in PA.
Mr. Reitz added that his low points included the tragic passing of a yearbook editor he was working with having to end the newsletter in 2016 and ChildLine dealings.
Throughout the highs and lows, Mr. Reitz said he has extended his work outside of the school setting.
“I work part-time for the Milton Lutheran Church. I do the streaming there,” he added. According to Mr. Reitz, working with computers isn’t his only hobby. He said he also enjoys taking walks, watching movies and making family yearbooks.
