Math teacher Mr. Nicholas Doresky is a new teacher at the high school. He said he is excited to see improvements in his students and watch them grow.
Mr. Doresky graduated from Milton before attending Penn State University to get his undergraduate degree. He later attended Bloomsburg University to get his teaching certificate.
He said he originally wanted to be a computer science teacher, but he realized Milton wasn’t really looking for one.
“I wanted to teach computer science but there wasn’t a high demand at the high school,” he said. “Math was the closest thing to computer science.”
Outside of school, Mr. Doresky said he enjoys running, watching football and playing video games. He also coaches the high school’s cross-country team.
Since he is a cross-country coach, Mr. Doresky said he enjoys seeing the same kids at practice that he does in class. He added that he enjoys interacting with students with different personalities. “Some students really like math and others don’t,” he added.
Mr. Doresky said he wanted to become like the teachers he had when he was in high school. He explained that he wants to have a positive influence on his students and leave an impact on their life. He added that some of his favorite aspects of being a student at Milton were competing in sports and his teachers.
Technology teacher Mr. Seth Reitz said he taught Mr. Doresky in multiple high school classes. He added that he enjoyed teaching him because he did his work and also wanted to learn and try new things.
“It is nice to see someone like Nick come back to work at Milton, especially someone with an understanding of programming and much of what else goes on in the computer lab,” Mr. Reitz added.
As a new teacher there are many stresses, but Mr. Doresky said he mainly struggles with planning lessons.
“It’s hard to figure out how long or short lessons should be,” he said. “Sometimes the lessons are too long, and sometimes we have five minutes to spare.”
He added that he would like to improve on his planning and preparation, as well as being more ready to teach a lesson before he goes to teach it.
Mr. Doresky said he hopes to build a good reputation for the Milton Math Department, adding that he hopes to get good test results and see improvements from his students.
