Do you like reading and eating good food? Well, Book Club may be the place for you.
Learning Support Teachers Ms. Allison Pauling and Ms. Rebecca Williams have started the club which meets monthly during Pride in Room 221.
Ms. Pauling and Ms. Williams said they both have a love for reading and are excited to start the club.
“In the past, there hasn’t been a lot of time to fit it in, but this year we are glad to have it,” said Ms. Pauling.
Currently there are a few student members who said,“they want it more often” Ms. Pauling added. “Our hope is for kids to get different perspectives and to have a good time.”
“We have been talking about it for a long time,” Ms. Williams said, adding that the school hasn’t had a book club in over 12 years.
She and Ms. Williams also bring doughnuts and snacks to every meeting, Ms. Pauling said. Meetings will consist of a group discussion of the current book and picking the next book, she explained.
The first book they read is a novel called Love and Gelato by Jenna Evans Welch. This book follows Lina, a high schooler who’s sent to spend her summer in Italy with her father, due to her mother’s dying wish.
“(Members) will be reading a variety of books and genres,” Ms. Pauling said. She added that she selected the first book, though in the future, a student may be in charge of choosing that month’s book and leading a discussion.
“I enjoy book club so far, and I’m happy we have one,” said Freshman Louise Cromley who recently joined the club. “I joined because I needed motivation to make the time to finish a book I started.”
She added that she loves reading, and she’s hoping that it helps her mentally and rekindles her love for books.
“Students are responsible for getting the book, whether it be from the library, online, or hard copy,” Ms. Pauling said. They also require parental approval, she added.
“Making sure parents have a say over what their kids are reading is important,” she said.
They also added that any student can join. If you are interested, find Ms. Pauling or Ms. Williams in Room 221.
