Senior Miles Brown works in the technology department at Milton High School as a part of the Diversified Occupations program (DO).
“I think it’s fascinating how we can create a device out of materials and elements that can think and computes data that you put into it based on a set of rules,” he said about the technology field. He added that he also finds his work helpful, interesting and fun.
Miles is paid $13 an hour and said his normal daily shift is about four hours because of school; however, it’s longer on half days and over breaks.
Part of his duties include staffing the tech help desk for the high school in the afternoon. He works with other full-time workers—Mr. Aaron Coup and Mr. Andrew McNeal, who are both Information Technology Managers, and Mr. Duane Gemberling, who is the district’s Network Administrator.
The tech department is able to go to every school in the district and help any way they can with computers, which can often take up most of the day. The school even provides a tech van they can travel in, according to Miles.
If there is a problem with a computer that they can’t solve, they send them out to one of three companies, Trafera, Lenovo, and HP, said Miles.
“I tend to handle a lot of inventory, especially with things we’re decommissioning. When we decommission devices, we will put them in inventory and when we have all of them for the year, we send them out to the highest bidders,” said Miles. This means the district can get some credit for the devices they buy the following year, he added
Miles said he aspires to pursue computer science in college and is currently taking AP Calculus, PC Now English 12 and PC Now programming as well as Diversified Occupations.
“My ultimate career goal would be to enter a job that could support living comfortably, either in software engineering or cybersecurity,” said Miles.
