This year, a group of about 17 students and five chaperones are taking a trip to Iceland. The group will leave on May 28 and return on June 2.
The students are a part of the high school’s Travel Abroad club. Math Teacher Mr. Jonathan Dick is the club advisor. “I do collaborate and bounce ideas off a friend of mine who teaches at a different school where they have a similar club,” he explained.
Senior Aubrie Hostetter is the president of the club and played a significant role in the planning process, according to Mr. Dick. Sophomore Claire Dick is the vice president. Senior Pierce Hoffer is the treasurer and helps with the finances. Junior Camryn Hoover is the historian.
Mr. Dick said students pay for the trip, but they hold fundraisers to help alleviate the cost. They don’t have a set price yet, but the students figured out a price of at least $1,100 per person, he added.
“We calculated the final cost based on the divided cost of accommodation, food, flights and rental cars,” Camryn said.
“We are not completely sure about the cost yet; it will probably be more than that,” Mr. Dick added.
Parents are not required to attend this trip, Mr. Dick said. “We want students to go out of their comfort zone, so we almost advise parents don’t go, but they are always welcome,” he explained.
Camryn said they plan to go to several waterfalls including the Skogafoss Waterfall. They also plan to visit the capital, Reykjavik, as well as a small town called Vik. “We plan to visit several museums, such as the National Museum of Iceland,” she added.
The goal of this trip is to broaden students’ perspective, according to Mr. Dick “We want to offer students a chance to get out and explore,” he added.
