This year’s Art Show will open May 8 and will continue through May 9. It will be open for parents and students during the school day (as well as from 5 to 7 p.m. for the public.) The art show will be in the high school gymnasium.
“All kinds of art will be there, including 2D and 3D,” said Art Teacher Ms. Lauren Richie. “Sometimes we get wood projects too.”
“Advanced seniors will have tents featuring all of their own artwork,” Ms. Richie said, adding that students k-12 will be included.
“We are hoping to have more student photo opportunities this year such as famous art pieces like the Mona Lisa that have cut outs for kids to take pictures with,” explained Ms. Richie. “This will give an interactive opportunity for kids to take pictures and something to remember the art show by.”
“We are also planning to continue the scavenger hunt and teachers choice awards,” Ms. Richie added. Every year teachers get a certificate to give to an art piece so the artist knows it was the teachers’ favorite. There is also a Superintendent Circle where Superintendent Dr. John Bickhart, as well as the office staff, goes around and chooses his favorite pieces and they are displayed in the district office for one year, said Ms. Richie.
The art show has been going on for as long as Art Teacher Ms. Cassie Baker can remember including when she was a student at Milton High School. In 2001 Ms. Baker’s senior art showcase was in the art classrooms as the library, the former art show venue, was getting re-done.
The art show is now in the high school gym. “This gives us a bigger area for the senior art showcases, and this prevents the art pieces from getting damaged,” Ms. Richie said. When the Art Show was in the library it also was in the hallways which led to some damage to the art pieces, she explained.
“The art show was going on when I started teaching here in 2008, but had been going on for much longer,” said Ms. Richie.
It takes the whole day to set up and half a school day to tear down. Students and art teachers set up the show, Ms. Richie said.
“Parents may come during the school day on Thursday and Friday as long as the sign in and out at the office,” Ms. Richie said. The elementary students get to come over and visit the art show both days, as well as the middle schoolers if their teachers bring them, she added.
