Prom trends throwback to older times

The trends for Prom 2023 include feathers, sequins, slits and more; however, trends change from year to year, and many attendees opt to set their own style.

Fusion Formal and Bridal in Lewisburg opened in 2019. Although the shop has not been open for very long, Seamstress/Bridal and Prom Consultant Ms. Ciara Voneida said she has seen several trends over the years.

Ms. Voneida said current trends for this year include sequins, feathers, corset bodices, deep v necklines as well as fun colors. She added that this year’s trends are very reminiscent of the 90s.

Over the years, she has seen trends change quickly, and previous trends often come back in style, said Ms. Voneida.

She added that the prices of prom dresses over the years have increased; however, at Fusion they try to keep prices as reasonable as possible. According to an online prom dress store, www.peachesboutique.com, the average price for prom dresses is anywhere between $100 and $600.

Ms.Voneida said that her favorite prom dress trend is whatever people feel the most confident in. She added that she doesn’t feel like any trend is out-of-date.

“I think if you like it and you feel good in it, be that next trend setter, own your own

sense of style, people will love it and hate it regardless,” she said.

According to Ms. Voneida, Fusion carries Nox, Clarisse, Primavera and Amarra dress brands, but added that she has been considering adding new lines lately.

She added that her strategy for finding inspiration for what she wanted her prom dress to look like was to try on as many dresses as possible, whether they were something in her comfort zone or not.

“You never know how much you’ll love or dislike a gown until you try it on,” said Ms Voneida. In more recent years, most people get their prom dress inspiration from social media sites, such as TikTok, Pinterest and Instagram, according to Ms. Voneida.

Ms. Voneida said that Fusion does not require appointments to try on dresses. She added that the next step after picking out a dress is scheduling alterations if they are necessary. According to Ms. Voneida, it is important to bring along the proper shoes for alterations to make sure the dress is the right length. She added that the most common alterations made to gowns are strap adjustments and hems.

Ms. Voneida said that she attended her high school prom in 2004. She said that her dress was brightly colored, beaded and quite the statement. “It had a beaded bodice with a layered tulle skirt ball gown – it was a statement piece, but it was very me,” she said.

Senior Brooklyn Wade said that she likes to start prom shopping early. She said that she booked her appointment to get her dress in January. She added that she has never had alterations done to her dress before. She also said that she books her hair appointment two weeks before the prom. Curls and pony tails are popular hair styles of prom this year, according to Brooklyn.
