Milton Area High School hasn’t offered a Driver’s education class in a quarter of a century.
Principal Mr. Michael Bergey said he took over the physical education and driver’s education classes when he joined the Milton staff in 2001 and taught it for the rest of that school year.
“The class used to cover laws, road signs and how to handle an accident; it also helped students learn how to drive safely on the road, and they didn’t have to go anywhere or pay anything,” said Mr. Bergey.
“I have no clue why we stopped offering the class, but if I had to guess, it would be because we had to make a financial decision,” he added.
The Central Susquehanna Intermediate Unit (CSIU) in Montandon offers two similar programs. Students can sign up for both programs online for $540, at www.csiu.org.
The two programs they offer are a Behind-the-Wheel Instruction and a 30 Hour Online Theory Course; students may sign up for just the online course for $120.
Junior Sienna Short has taken the CSIU program. “I learned about the program from my upperclassmen friends who have also taken the course,” said Sienna.
“I wanted to take the program to receive actual instruction on how to perform different skills rather than just taking my test,” she added.
The Behind-the Wheel Instruction requires students to pay $420, have a valid Pennsylvania learner’s permit, complete a theory course and 65 hours of practice driving.
