Milton Area High School offers multiple college course options to students.
Some of the PC Now classes include PC Now World History, PC Now Chemistry and PC Now Psychology. All of these classes are offered by Pennsylvania College of Technology in Williamsport.
Milton offers 11 PC Now course options, and nine current AP classes, and AP Finance added next year for Entrepreneurship Students, said Guidance Counselor Ms. Leslie Robinson.
Social Studies Teacher Mr. Ronald Schultz said that in order to receive college credit from Penn College, students need to pass the class. He added that most PC Now classes offer three credits, but AP classes can provide a student with up to six credits.
An AP class is designed to replicate a college course at a high school level, he said. This differs from a PC Now class because the college credits awarded on how well the student scores on the final test rather than just the class itself, added Mr. Schultz.
Ms. Robinson added that individual colleges have their own policies on whether they accept AP credits or not, and what scores they accept.
Ms. Robinson said other colleges, such as Lackawanna College, in Scranton, offer dual enrollment to high school students as well. Students can also take these classes online.
She added that students can pay to take classes at Commonwealth University (commonwealthu.edu) or Luzerne County Community College.
“If you go to Commonwealth University’s website and look for their Early College Program, it gives you the step-by-step process for taking classes,” Ms. Robinson added.
Ms. Robinson said in order to receive the credit for PC Now classes, students simply need to pass the class. For Lackawanna, she said students have to pay $100 per credit.
She said that the tuition for Milton students at Commonwealth is only 75 percent of the normal tuition cost.
Many students do this to reduce the time and cost of college, said Ms. Robinson. “A few kids have had enough credits to cover a freshman year of college.”
