The Milton School District recognizes students in the high school in many ways, such as Rotary Student of the Month, Breaking Bread Student of the Month and Outstanding Senior.
Milton High School Assistant Principal Mr. William Campbell said he oversees the Breaking Bread Student of the Month award. The award is from the Breaking Bread company in Milton. The award recognizes students not just for academics, but for leadership qualities.
“The award is for a student that kind of goes under the radar sometimes, where they’re a good kid. They show leadership. The company does this to give back to the community and school.” said Mr. Campbell. The company gives the student a $20 gift card, he added.
“I think there are about 15 teachers that I send an email to, and they nominate a kid. Then a team sifts through all of them, and we decide on a student and say, this is the person that won this month. I then bring them down to my office. I congratulate them, I call their parents, then they come to the school board meeting to receive it,” Mr. Campbell explained.
According to Mr. Campbell, a change for the Breaking Bread Student of the Month is that he is trying to arrange for the nominating teacher to read a letter they wrote about the student at the board meeting. If for some reason a teacher can not make the meeting, he wants to have Mr. Seth Reitz’s video production students record a short video of the teacher’s explanation to be displayed and projected that night.
The other awards, Rotary Student of the Month and Outstanding Senior, are limited to seniors, according to Mr. Campbell.
He added that the Rotary Student of the Month and Outstanding Senior awards have been around for a while. The Breaking Bread Student of the Month award has only been around for three years.
The Outstanding Senior award is selected monthly by a committee of teachers. The committee receives an email with a list of the top 50 seniors. The committee decides who receives the award from the group of nominated seniors, according to Milton High School Secretary Ms. Deana Kovilaritch.
Ms. Kovilaritch added that when choosing the Outstanding Senior award, the committee takes into consideration not just academics, but also outside activities such as sports and clubs.
Rotary Student of the Month is an award given monthly to a senior in a CTE program. It cycles through all the different types of CTE classes and each CTE teacher will nominate a student in their class. The student is not solely based on academics. The student is also chosen by how long they have been with the program, how they treat others in the class and leadership qualities, Ms. Kovilaritch said.
According to Ms. Kovilaritch, both the Rotary Student and the Outstanding Senior award winners receive an invitation card to the next school board meeting to receive the award and get their picture taken, which then gets posted on the Milton Area School facebook.
