This year Milton High School has introduced a volleyball club. The first practice will be March 19 at 6-7:30 p.m. These practices will meet every Thursday in the high school gym unless members are notified of a change.
Volleyball was approved as a club in mid-January. Junior Bella Poynter is the student leader, and Emotional Support Teacher Ms. Joey Ficks is the club’s advisor.
“When I was learning how to play volleyball, there was no club at the school to help me so I wanted to make one to help others,” Bella said. “I learned my sophomore year, and I joined a club outside of our school.”
“Ms. Ficks will be more of a coach and will be in charge of planning the practices,” Bella added.
“Anyone can join, and it will be co-ed,” Ms. Ficks said. Bella added that members do not need to have volleyball experience.
Those interested in joining can go to Room 234 or see Bella. There are also posters and signup sheets around the school.
“Members will be playing with each other to start with, but in the future, we are hoping to find other clubs to play against,” Ms. Ficks said.
“To start a club, you must go to the school principal, then be approved by the school board,” Athletic Director Mr. Rod Harris said. “There are no other sports clubs right now.”
Other schools including Lewisburg, Danville and Warrior Run have volleyball teams. “Currently there is no push for a volleyball team, but this could be the first step of having one in the future,” said Bella.
