Social Studies Teacher Mr. Douglas Bird joined the Milton High School faculty this year. Mr. Bird taught at Saint John Neumann Regional Academy in Williamsport, from 2018 to 2021, then taught at Mifflinburg High School from 2021 to 2025.
According to Mr. Bird, he graduated from Warrior Run High School, then went to Mansfield for his bachelor’s degree in political science. He then went to Bloomsburg University for his master’s degree in Curriculum and Instruction with teaching certification.
Mr. Bird said he applied to Milton because of his niece, a middle school student. “I want to be able to teach my niece and see her grow,” he added. His best friends are Social Studies Teacher Mr. Shawn Moore and French and English Teacher Mr. Wesley Cromley were a big factor in his decision to move and teach at Milton, Mr. Bird added.
According to Mr. Bird, out of all the schools he has taught at, Milton is the largest. He also added that this is the first time he has taught a period schedule instead of block schedule.
Mr. Bird said that he always wanted to be a history teacher because he likes to help people learn about important things that happened in the past. He said if he couldn’t teach history, he would have liked to teach physical education or be a construction worker because he is very creative and likes building things.
Mr. Bird said that before he became a teacher, he worked at Weis warehouse, the YMCA and as an umpire for softball games. Out of high school, he served in the Army for six years with some of his best friends, he added.
Mr. Bird said the biggest teaching challenge he has faced is the feeling of not doing enough. He said that his focus is to make learning fun for every student. “I want my class to be educational and fun; I want kids to want to come to my class,” he added.
According to Mr. Bird, teaching has really impacted him in a good way. He said he loves it when students reach out over the years to talk to him because he likes to see how they have grown. Mr. Bird added that if students could take anything from his class, he wants them to remember to always try their best, and falling short does not define them as people.
