The Panther Press’s Snack Spot features some of the favorite recipes for after-school snacks from the school’s teachers and the staff.
Art teacher Ms. Casie Baker’s favorite after school snack is Trail Mix. Trail Mix typically contains nuts, dried fruit and different types of candy, but it can sometimes have other ingredients depending on the kind. “It is often eaten with your hands,” which is why she said that she enjoys this versatile snack.
According to Ms. Baker, her favorite kind of Trail Mix is the Target – Caramel Cashew. A new kind she’s been trying and enjoying recently, is the Kar’s Dunkin Caramel Cold Brew Trail Mix, which is available at Giant. “Trail mix can be rather pricey, but it’s worth it. Kar’s trail mix was $9,” she added.
Ms. Baker said this snack is her go-to because it is “easy and not messy,” and “it is a healthy and quick snack.”
According to Ms. Baker, she used to make trail mix when she first started eating it but it became too much of a hassle, so she turned to buying it. When she’d make it, it would consist of “nuts, dried fruit, candy and whatever else she was feeling like adding,” she said.
Ms. Baker said that she has been enjoying this snack for over 20 years because of its simplicity. She eats this about four to five times a week, and it makes her feel very content, she added. Ms. Baker said that her children also eat trail mix but are pickier about what it contains.
To make your own at home, Trail Mix does not require much work. You just need simple things like nuts, dried fruit, chocolate and anything else you’d like to add. I’ve made this quick simple recipe with ingredients you can find at your local Weis Markets. It includes Weis brand Mixed Nuts 9 oz – $4.79, Sun-Maid California Sun-dried Raisins 12 oz – $3.69, M&M Chocolate Candies Mini 18oz – $8.99, Kind Soft Baked Dark Chocolate Chunk Granola 11 oz – $5.49 with prices according to Weis Markets.
Then after you gather your ingredients, this is a recipe you could eyeball and make however you like. Just put it into a bowl and mix all the ingredients together. Store in plastic bags or airtight containers.
