National Art Honor Society (NAHS) is a national organization for high school students to join who have a passion for creating art for the community and the school.
NAHS helps set up and host the art show and other artistic events for the community, like creating a clay pumpkin or Christmas tree fundraisers to help raise money for a potential Washington D.C. trip and money for a scholarship.
“NAHS is not just an art club; it is what the kids make it. The club also contributes to the betterment of the school NAHS is based on the student part,” said Art Teacher Ms. Lauren Richie.
Currently, there are 27 members actively involved in the group.
The current officers of NAHS are Senior Ella Heeter as President, Senior Regan Klinefelter as Vice President, Senior Nickole Brouse as Treasurer, Junior Ace Bell as Historian and Sophomore Macy McCaffery as Secretary.
Art Teachers Ms. Lauren Richie and Ms. Casie Baker are the chapter sponsors of the group. “I have been helping with the group way before Covid. I would say since 2016. That’s almost ten years now,” Ms. Richie added.
“In order to join the group, students must be taking an art class and have an A and have a B average in all their other classes. They also must sign a contract, permission slip, and pay a $5 fee,” said Ms. Richie.
“Our members usually meet on Tuesdays or Thursdays, but it may depend on what else is taking place on that day, so we like to plan accordingly,” said Macy.
“This year is different from last year because more kids are joining, participating and coming to meetings,” said Ms. Richie.
“We would love to see more active participation, art in the community, and more money for the Washington, D.C. trip to go see the National Gallery of Art. Last year we could not go on any trip since we didn’t have enough money,” added Ms. Richie.
“Senior members of the club get cords and tassels at graduation. They also become members of the National Chapter and can participate in different contests and obtain scholarships,” said Ms. Richie.
No Milton student has ever participated in any of the national contests, but Ms. Richie and Ms. Baker provide a local scholarship and award $500 to one senior.
“I probably enjoy all of the art involved events. I like being able to help others enjoy art too,” said Macy.
“NAHS is not just a group. It’s also about dedication,” added Ms. Richie. “Their goal is to guide the students and keep an active club that provides opportunities for art students.”
